August 10, 2010 By the Seashore

I play by the shore
Arrange my shells, driftwood and seaweed,
I build sand castles,
I shade my eyes and scan the beach,

It is empty as far as I can see,
You know the place I play,
I am there regularly,
Yes, I remain,

I wait for you,
We splash into the sea,
It is only my imagination,
It is quiet around me,

Except for the sound of the surf,
That I hear when I raise the shell to my ear,
And I hear it, no matter where I am,
Perhaps I only imagine the surf, too,

The gulls cry and dive for bits of nourishment,
And like the gull,
I fly aimlessly and watch for you,
There are no longer games to play,

Each minute of time ticks on endlessly,
This is "it", the real thing,
Just a brief space
Without, definition.

a great feel for the ocean, but is it real, or just an illusion..i got the feel you were thinking about it but not there...esp since there were no more games to play...as if this was a fond memory...nice one shot.

It seems the whole piece is ambiguous, about what is reality? As the writer, I'm not sure. But thanks for the comment. You made me take another look.

Appreciate the clarification, I had the thought you where addressing death. Nonetheless, I grew up by the ocean and the impressions, sensory and imaginative, have stayed with me. Really liked your poem because it brought the memories back. Thanks, Annell

I love this, I feel as though you are carrying memories of the sea, and a special someone with you at the sea, wherever you are - as though they are your moveable feast. I may be wrong but I thought that this is beautiful even if I am wrong ;-)

Hmmm. The sea as a metaphor for the ambiguities of life. I see that. I live by the water and find it a metaphor for much of life. The sound of tide and surf become part of the rhythm of life and you seem to have captured those rhythms here. Well written. Thank you.

I love the images that this evoked. And I find it interesting to read two back-to-back pieces here that speak of time at the shore, written by a desert dweller. I don't think of Taos as getting too hot in summer, but maybe I'm wrong?

P.S. Your sunset picture is breathtaking.
