Monday May 2, 2011 Magpie #64/Poetry Potluck

Magpie #64

Holy Family on the Portal
Innocents snuggle close
Mother with strong arms
Wraps her will around them
Turns her back on
The smokey mountain
That threatens
Life and limb
The very porch
She stands on

Plans have been made
They have come too far
This is their home
One has already been lost
In the mine
The black maw
Giver of life
And taker of same

The greed and desire
For the black gold
Energy for the country
And as far away
As London
Destroy the land
To get at that gold

Holy families extinguished
They were never told
Took away the treasure
Left destruction in their wake

A Mother
With her little one
Knows nothing
Watches blind

Poetry Potluck:prompt: Doubt, Fear, Inhibition and Hesitation

Doubt, Fear, Inhibition and Hesitation
Do not make friends
Do not take them along
They will undermine
Your confidence
They are the
Neighborhood bullies

They will keep you down
Insure your failure
Keep an eye out
If you see them
Heading your way
Lock your door
Turn the other way
Find a new path
You don't need them

Like a cold wind
Shield yourself
Pull up your collar
Whisper five good things
About yourself
You are complete
Without doubt,
Fear, inhibition
and hesitation

Beautiful words just tumbling out. Your muse is in rare form this morning, Annell. Wonderful.

Fantastic. I especially love the holy family poem, based on such a beautiful painting. The cost to lives caused by the extraction of resources is a topic dear to my heart. Also love the wise advice to banish doubt and fear. Love the images you offer.

I touched on some of the same themes - black gold, destruction.
Wise advice in your second poem!

Like the family portrait. How we forget that the people used as resources, like all others, do get used up in the long run. And like the poem on fear and doubt. It is a daily lesson, served up with an unending array of frills,

Myself, I prefer positive thinking to combat fear and doubt. Inhibition can be a killer...

Sometimes to be blind, to not know is a blessing. Her fate couldnt have been good...let's hope she always had hope.

Both of these, touch deeply within the heart of your readers. Glimpses into evils which carry great power and destructive abilities. Nicely shared.

Wonderful work! I, too, used strong arms - they were what I noticed first. They impart a sense of security and moving forward. Very nice poetry!

I felt all that you wrote within the first half of your poem (64) the fist time that I viewed the painting of mother and child. It was rather deja vu reading it here in its fullness. I enjoyed this.

Annell you have captured the feel of another time like only a true poet could do...this is amazing! :-)

I love the way you turned the painting into an evocation of Madonna and Child--beautiful Magpie.
And you're right: doubt, fear and inhibition are the neighborhood bullies.

Thank you.
