January 30, 2014 We Write Poems #198/ Child's Play

We Write Poems #198  Prompt Child’s Play

Child’s Play
At twilight
As the fireflies
Are turning on
The world is
Magic
Full of fun
Children play
Games
Some traditional
Some made up
On the spot

A game of tag
Might be initiated
With ‘Your It!”
Exclaimed
All begin
To run
Laughter flutters
Behind each
Running child
Like colorful
Ribbons
If touched
Or captured
A new ‘It’
Is proclaimed
Pure glee

A piece of chalk
A sidewalk
A diagram
To draw
Hop
Hop
Hop
In the circle
Of the
Porch light
Long ago

Note:  In memory, it is as if Edward Hopper painted the scene.  Children playing, fireflies, and yet there is a sense of loneliness.   I did visit the site recommended, the words came, prompted by the prompt ‘Child’s Play.’

January 27, 2014 We Write Poems We Wordle #4

Prompt:  Woman, desire, answers, lunatic, pretty, harsh, asking, ridicule, humiliation, platitudes, obvious, pay, sacrifice, single, obvious, sky, translation, deeply, lived, rules, water, hurt, darkness, crowd, watch, harsh, birth, caught, changing, oil, rendering, bone, tarragon, orange, locusts, brazen

Time is Like a River
From which you
Drink only once
Because the flow
That has passed
Will never pass again

It is ridiculous
To think of the river
Pausing
Then backing up
Just for you
Because you were not
Paying attention
Didn’t notice
Or wanted that very
Special day all
Over again

I desire to stay in one place
Sink my roots into the
Darkness
For things to stay the same
Like the insect
Caught in resin
Yet....
Not one single day is like
Another
Life is a constantly
Changing carousel
Accompanied by
Calliope

It is no sacrifice
Really
To say goodbye
To what was
Like the game of
Roulette
There is always the
Chance tomorrow
Or the next spin
Of the wheel
Will be even better
Than this day

A life lived deeply
Renders meat from
The bone
The recipe is to be
Aware of each moment
Read the translation
In the sky
Collect orange
Blossoms
For your hair
Create the life
Wanted
Heaven...if there is one
Is in this moment

Note:  When I thought of ‘Life is a constantly changing carousel,’ I thought of the calliope music to accompany the carousel.  I decided to look it up, and found Calliope is an instrument also called steam organ or steam piano, and In Greek mythology, it is also the foremost of the nine Muses, the patron of epic poetry.  How nice to think that life is accompanied by the inventor of melody and rhythm.

January 25, 2014 The Sunday Whirl/ Studio Visit: Shiela Miles

The Sunday Whirl:  Prompt:  country, facilitate, aspect, sent, strands, state,
sustain, write, time, plans, embrace, juggling

A Country of My Own
A place where I belong
A state of serenity
With time to write
A picture to paint

Making plans
Embrace what is
Put the vacuum away
And a thousand
Other things
Each day

In my pocket
Folded small
An envelope
Of blue
A handmade
Valentine
Sent

Out of season
Your heart
Given
Beating still
Sustains
The beating
Of my own

My life a circus act
Under the big top
Strands of golden hair
Flying through the air
Greasepaint

A juggler I am
Juggling what is
What could be
What never will

Note:  My poem found its' end, and I found I had not used all the words....they didn't seem to belong in my poem.

STUDIO VISIT:  SHEILA MILES  www.artistmiles.com  Santa Fe, Multi-media Artist and teacher at the Desert Academy.

...it was a warm January morning.  She turned the key and opened the door on a warm and light workspace, her studio.

Paintings are everywhere; different ideas, direct expressions, which are never labored over, but retain the freshness of the first touch of the brush as it meets the canvas.

Sheila says she loves to paint, has to paint.  Begins her work without a plan, simply paints, ideas come and often she paints over them.  One piece may have many paintings, painted over.  She never really knows where a painting might be going.

Destinations are determined by where she stops, wipes her brush and turns off the studio lights.
