Traces in the Snow

I open my umbrella        still it snows      night into day           day into night

transforms everything            in winter no blooms or delicate pedals

tiny birds with dark heads       perched on bare branches       yearning for spring

hop around     search for seeds                   leave dark prints on the white ground

when all seems hopeless        we are required to wait until....

              the exact time not designated

the sun returns       to warm our           cold blue hearts                  still beating

               negotiating the river of life

a large uncut tobacco leaf                 unfurled                           tied to a post

a brown flag         fluttering in the wind                      against the white ground

we do not give up         will not surrender         slowly we take one step at a time

we also leave traces in the snow

I like the last few lines with the flag fluttering in the wind and the one step at a time & leaving traces in the snow!

i've been yearning for spring and sun as well, but for now we must leave traces in the snow.

Waiting is on my mind these days, too, Annell. I love the imagery in this piece.

Yes, the seemingly never ending of this winter - but we will not surrender! - thank you for this hope filled poem - spring is right around the corner!

but the sun will return...that is a promise that will be kept....
we only must endure in perseverence...

I love those footprints.. it's good that there are always those.. and just maybe we can find those to follow.

It is in that waiting we learn so much...'we are required to wait until....the exact time not designated'....really enjoyed this.

Waiting, the hardest thing for me to do. Filling the time with traces, while my mind chases questions about what I might have forgotten to do. Like the way you fill the page with thoughts unfinished that leave spaces for the reader to find a few of her own.

The birds are always so diligent when there is but one ray of sun. They never seem to give up do they? I welcomed their chirping today after some cold and cheerless days.

Beautiful writing ... and I sure get the impression there's a lot of snow in America at present! It seems to have become the overwhelming theme for most of the US poets I read. How you must all be longing for Spring!
