Sunday's Whirligig/Summers at my Grandparents / Poets United Poetry Pantry #153

Summers at my Grandparents

my grandfather                       charlie                               loved to play dominoes

once he took my little sister and I to the domino parlor          my grandmother

alma                                  who did beautiful needlework                   was very angry

called charlie a fool                   for taking two little girls                 to such a place

the rift was soon mended         he promised never again         we often laughed about it

my grandparents lived in a small rural texas town            where fences were made of stones

robert frost said                  good fences make good neighbors

... and they keep the sheep from leaving

down the road was a little white country church                        on hot days

the windows were open             wide eyed                           and the bees were buzzing

we would hear humming          from the church         and the scent of honeysuckle in the air

it all seems so long ago         cherished memories no longer sharp        bleached and faded

Here it is a bright and joyous memory..even yesterday seems like a faded memory but when written and preserved it seems to spring back to life and is gratefully shared xo

Love your reminiscing here, Annell. You are fortunate to have grandfather memories. Mine were deceased before I was born. Though the memories shared are no longer sharp, they are indeed deeply rooted.

I agree with Jae....the writing of it springs it back to life. And it is a lovely thing to be able to share in your memories as the way you have written them makes them feel real to the reader as well. Beautiful :-)

The images and the weaving of Robert Frost quotations made this a wonderful memory..

While the details of our faded memories are sometimes lost, we still bask in the joy of these times...these thoughts that break through our senses again.

How many of us will have such inconsequential but fond memories of our grandparents that keep them alive in our minds. This is a beautiful piece.

Lovely, reminds me of arguments my grandmother had with her second husband over some of his choices - and the fond memories I also have of where they lived.

There was such a lovely quality to life then. Everything seemed much simpler, so innocent and good. Your poem takes me back to my own grandparents and those wonderful summer days of childhood.

I don't know how much of your tale is "true," but it reminds me of a similar experience when I was young: My beloved drunkard uncle came for a visit, and took me to the local tavern, where I watched the old men play dominoes, while my uncle quenched his thirst. My mother was furious!
