Poets United  Poetry Pantry #278

War is Your Ritual

your look freezes           the heart of the other                 your eyes glitter

beneath the brim of your hat      temper flares                 hateful words fall

from your tongue           like a fingernail                scraped across a black board

those who were once friends      now become your enemies       you believe the worst

withhold your love        no longer laugh                         declare war

the windows in your shack become grimy with smoke        infractions remain nameless

seven years have passed        or so it seems             actually only a short time

your overalls dirty from warfare                              war is your ritual

it is how you play the game       the world between us is silent               i wrote to you

a letter blue                                 tried to tell you                   how i was for me

but the merry-go-round               just goes round and round                   no beginning

no end                                  holding on to your position        like this present moment

we also slowly fade away         in a million years                it won't matter who was right

What war can do to a human heart, it can scorch and burn the heart... it can make us dead inside.

it does matter who hosts it.

A lot of truth & depth in this poem :)
Beautifully expressed!

Lots of love,

Sad when the other person would rather feel "right" than be happy. I am weary at the bigger war games being played on the global stage - one bombs the crap out of the other, the other retaliates, then there must be retaliation for that - peace will never be won with bombs. Sigh.

true...at distance it won't be seen who was right....but only deeds....

I think you did very well putting it all together, especially with the wisdom at the conclusion. We seem too often to forget that in future years it won't matter who was right. Perhaps we continue the war for the only reason of saving face, but a face alone is usually a sad thing.

Sadly war is ideologically and profit oriented and most solutions attempted exacerbate the situation. What an inheritance we leave for children.

Well said, Annell. Shame that this is not just fiction.

The most profound truth in this wonderful piece is in the last line (for me at least)...some people cannot seem to live without a war of some kind...sadly it is often waged against those who deserve more and should be loved xo

What a powerful poem, Annell. Yes, if people are 'at war' with one another, it definitely won't matter at the end of time who was right... I think this can be read at both a personal and a global level. Chilling really.

pure cool insights.

You build up the perpetual motion, the automatic closure and continuance of strife to make the last line ring ever louder! If only we could make it not matter tomorrow.
