January 10, 2016 The Sunday Whirl - Sunday's Whirligig - Poets United/ New Year's Eve Taos, New Mexico

New Year's Eve in Taos, New Mexico

new year's eve           fire crackers &bullets heard              neighbors celebrating

the moon shown brightly       on the new fallen snow               some think it odd

but in the west          it is quiet common                             on occasion

shooters are struck by their own bullets       some are hit in the head by falling bullets

tears are shed           wounds dressed                     happy new year wishes all around

Oh the crazy things we see and hear when celebrating...here I have never heard bullets but lots of illegal fireworks!

Yikes! Kind of scary especially if those who are shooting have had a few (many!) drinks ahead of time.

Here, too, "out Beaver Creek" as we say , "the creekers" shoot guns and fireworks at midnight. It used to freak Pup out...........

Yikes! Sounds like a terribly scary way to bring in the New Year :-(

Ah.. somehow I cannot really understand the joy of explosions... something I grew out of liking.. and using a rifle is even worse (maybe it's just the bullet come back to where they came from).

And the shooters will always say, "But, it's a tradition."

Last year, a young boy was killed by one of those celebratory gunshots - arced up and down and took a young life. No one who was shooting that night has fessed up. Police investigated, traced the shot to one of four houses - their guns magically disappeared. And then in Cologne, the atrocious attacks on women by groups of men who also would throw firecrackers in the hoods of their jackets. And this is why we stay home on New Year's and mind our own business. Interesting poem this is.

i just find it so ironic that the term 'celebration' is used in the same breath of a 'gun'. guns are made for one purpose, celebration is totally opposite

Wow! That sounds a bit life-threatening for the first day of a new year.

The subtlety in this poem speaks volumes - the world is indeed a strange place..a short step between bullets and firecrackers...sadly..

Happy New Year's fellow poet! Love the change in mood. Needed that twist.

'shooters are struck by their own bullets'....and happy new year wishes......how often we live by past traditions not even thinking about real reason to celebrate....reacting like worms instead of really appreciating every moment of peace.
