February 21, 2017 deVerse/A Suburb poem

Suburbs

where are we            when we are neither                         near nor far

just across the line    out of reach                       a place with no real name

might be called happy valley/or green acres           not listed on the map

unknown                   to you and me                        for some

a place called home     no library of our own         strip malls and gas stations

churches and such       just off the highway            forgotten

nobody's dream           not a town or village           not a hometown to be claimed

a place made up        all the streets look the same          the houses and people too

it is the suburbs         a place that is no place at all      simply somewhere in between

I love how you penned this, it reflects so many words and images I shared in my own poem.

Bang on--those housing developments, sterile & walled in are nowhere. I prefer to live in a small town between suburbia & downtown. But God help us, at rush hours, we are cut off, forced to huddle & wait, or plan our trip during the quieter times.

The place without a name makes such sense to me... that's suburbia..where borders are insignificant

"A small town...between suburbia and downtown" ... what a great place to be! "Sterile and walled in...nowhere" Somehow I want to defend some suburbs! A great read.

I get you with nowhere in between, where all the streets look about the same ~ Good one Annell ~

I like the description "we are neither near nor far" People are spaced far enough apart so they do not feel near to each other and yet they are nearer than they might want to be. They at least get to mow their own lawns and argue about fence placement chores that people who live in town homes and condos are not permitted to worry about.

The suburbs were indeed no place at all, just simply somewhere in between. They all looked the same. We were all encouraged to look the same, dress the same, talk the same, like a robotized society.

suburbia is definitely nobody's dream...not a hometown to be claimed...perfect...there's a tinge of sadness here too...

I like the way the shape of this poem reflects the thoughts, Annell. My favourite line:
'just across the line out of reach a place with no real name'.

You nailed it! The place that is in between....I enjoyed this. Especially the idea that often, that suburb has not real name...

I like your line, where are we when we are near nor far ... I'm not sure about your suburbia but we have 5 libraries within 10 miles of each other of course, along with strip malls in which two of them, libraries are located.
