LISTS/ April 30, 2017/ The Sunday Whirl/ Sunday's Whirligig/ Poets United -- Poets Pantry

LISTS

where to begin                      first things first                      create a list

begin the calendar year       january the month                life curled by the fire

making lists                            new year’s resolutions          all to be broken in short order

with that out of the way       a new list of what is next     perhaps i will

mingle with the jays             in spring                                 pick the yellow daffodils

sit on the branch       and sing at the top of my lungs       the songs of spring

i let go                         and spiral to the ground                   join the saints in prayer

i wear woven sackcloth       of brown                                 rough to the touch

run in the fields of new green         an itch breaks out     cabin fever burning

check the lists                       settle accounts                      you are the daughter

i never had                            dressed in lace              a red silk rope around your waist

you drag it behind                red line in the landscape     dolls on a shelf

lives woven from thin air      the year continues                new lists created

I love your spring list, especially sitting in a tree singing at the top of your lungs. Way more fun than MY To Do lists, LOL. Poignant, the lines about the daughter you never had.

The daughter you never had... reminds me of a classic poem in Sweden by Anna-Maria Lenngren who wrote a poem in the form of a letter to a daughter she never had.

Lists are the bane of my existence. I try to shy away from them as much as possible!

I think that lists are just an attempt to try to control some kind of outcome. Sort of putting the house in order because there is always chaos.
