A SLY CAPTAIN --The Sunday Whirl #305 --Sunday's Whirligig #117 FIRES BURN HOT/ -- Poets United/Poets Pantry

The Sunday Whirl  #305

            A SLY CAPTAIN

in a blink of the eye     the known world can change            up-rooted

as if drunk                   spin                                unsure of my footing

i stumble                      all can be snatched away           left in the dust

tattered                         the mountain can sheer off             a landslide

it can happen in a single instant            the curve ball               thrown

the storm comes up      i lash myself to the mast        it is a sly captain
                                                                                               that can

weather all storms       return unharmed          tuck the children in
safely at the end of the day

Sunday Whirligig #117

            FIRES BURN HOT

lost in the middle         not young                     not elderly

middle child                 wednesday’s child        mid-week

telling nursery stories                waiting             the end is in sight

school is out                 first day of summer      free to dance

free to be                     rhythms and rhymes   slower now

you reminded me         yellow bikini                beach parties

the weather hot energy hiding in shadows         of dark cool blue

purples too                   lunch                           cucumber sandwiches

iced-tea                                    mom’s favorite lemon pie         yellow goo

the world quiet             mountains lay sleepy    no need to hurry

the snow has melted                 no reason for upset      it happens every summer

when the sun burns bright        smoke in the valley      fires burn hot

I so appreciate the hope the captain offers in the end of your first piece. And I enjoy a cucumber sandwich on occasion. This was a nice stop on Sunday's readings. Thanks.

Yeah...that one second matters...
Wonderful images in the second poem...

I loved both the poems.
The first one i felt like I was getting thrown around in that storm with the captain and the next one was so relaxing. Nice Juxtaposing.

I enjoyed both poems, and loved the first one. I read it five times--once from left to right as a whole, then the three columns as individual poems, and then united again... Such an experience! Like Samyuktha suggests, stormy.

it is a sly captain that can weather all
storms return unharmed

Yes, he has to be skillful and very well prepared

Yes indeed...the world as we know it can change so quickly that it makes our head spin. We all hope for that captain who can help us weather the storm.

I loved both poems.....especially the summer poem. I can feel the heat of that fire. One is already burning in the mountain near Port.

I think we need less sly captains... they usually leave the crew behind... makes me thinking of Oh Captain, my captain...

Beautifully written on both, but the lemon pie stole the show for me. Yes, a gooey mess, but one of my favorites. I can feel you stretching and finding those wings.

I enjoyed both of these. The juxtaposition of the sly captain pinned against a return home to tuck the children in - brought a smile.

The second poem is pure delight ... beautifully sketched with eloquent details. A wonderfully rendered piece.

I like these beside each other...it provides a vivid reminder that since everything can change in an instant with a curve ball thrown out of nowhere....live a life that truly grabs hold of those rich images you've presented in the second poem...enjoy those cucumber sandwiches, those first days of summer, etc...

The sad recollections of times past with those little memories you still hold dear.

Two sides of that heat I guess which burns and balms. Having children to tuck in at day's end saves the captain in the first and relishing the child who still enjoys summer in the second are essential in the compass.

This is beautiful. Seagulls changing into rowdy magpies; from shell collecting to incredible sunsets. Some changes are truly awesome.
