Ancient Caravan -- The Sunday Whirl #307 -- Poets United

 ANCIENT CARAVAN

sunlight shimmers across the sand         caravans loaded with silks and exotic perfumes

guided by the stars              there is a rhythm to their passage                        it is the same

as their father’s before them          nights in the desert are chilly        they pitch tents

of colored sheets                 plum and red                                    in the last light of day

fires glow golden                 rival sparkling stars                         above

the prophet tells stories      ancient history                      of the people

their past journeys               and of journeys to come     a shot sounds

echoes in the canyon         rumors of bandits                 persuade them to

pick a new route                  it would be foolish               to continue on the same

light from the full moon       lights the desert                   shimmers across the sand

creates a new world                        nothing seems the same               many days

and nights                 before they reach their destination          the caravan vulnerable

We, I think, are the caravan, and we are very vulnerable...

I feel we are all moving in that caravan... very visual... and we all need the oasis.

I love the story of the caravan painted by moonlight and then the understory of our humanity/world as the caravan....really well done!

You have given us a sense of this journey & the vulnerability of the caravan.

I didn't want this to stop, but wanted to see the vulnerable caravan safely to its destination! A compelling write.

I suppose we're all on our own caravan, as is the course of this world. Great writing Annell.

This poem contains so many lovely images, Annell. I am most struck by the sheets of plum and red.

What an incredible picture you have painted here with your words. Rich colors and textures ... a journey through exotic lands ... danger under a full moon. A wonderful, poetic 'get-away'. Loved this!

nothing seems the same
many days and nights
before they reach their destination
the caravan vulnerable

Gives a picture of cautious travel by caravans in the desert. Without road signs the stars are the guide. Very vulnerable.Very true annell!
