2017 November PAD Chapbook Challenge: Day 1 /A New Day -- Saints/ Poets United Midweek Motifs

A New Day

a new day will include              happiness                                 walking in on stilts

dancing a jig                             perhaps you will return             to complete my happiness

as a child          when my grandmother came                     we would sit on the front steps

and sing           “she’ll be coming around the mountain”          without realizing

one day she would not come     that people were not permanent          my parents

my grandparents                       our pets                        to see life as tissue paper

blowing in the wind                 is probably a truer view            from birth

we are changing                       happening so slowly                 we might miss it

nothing stays the same              each day is a new day               and a new “we”

Saints or Sinners Be

we never know            who is who                  saints or sinner be

you come to me           a sunny face                 what is hidden beneath

dark storm clouds        gather                           rule the day

your goodness known to me       the other side of the coin        unknown

we all have two sides    a love and a lovely       a cad and a bounder

look in the mirror        there you are                the side you want to see

how to see the other side          be aware          of what you show to others

know you have shown it to me             we are all         saints and sinners be

Hello Annell, this was something I wish I'd written. So beautiful. Happy All Saints Day!

"Saints or Sinners Be" gives me pause, and it is a pause I think I need periodically to find the humility I need to proceed. I don't actually aspire to sainthood, but would like to be the best possible me. Good one.

So very true, life as tissue paper blowing in the wind. My sister's last little dog, Blakey, thelast of our pack of five dogs, died this morning. We are without dogs, and we have always had so many. Sigh. In your second poem, I resonate with the awareness that all of us have two sides..........

You have an exquisite way with words, my friend. I love the imagery of "our lives are tissue paper blowing in the wind". Well said.

I don't believe we begin to "grow" until we know that we walk in both sunshine and shadow...

We hold the power to be each, and the power to choose who we will be and who we will show others that we are. There is power in each. The power to give life. And the power to destroy it. TO understand the full person, I wonder do we have to see both sides. Or perhaps see what it is that causes each of the reactions.

"Saints or Sinners be"...We're both. Sinners have future and Saints have past, as they say. Nice & thought provoking.

So true, Annell. We often don't know who is who. We may NOT recognize easily the 'saints' among us; and we also might not recognize that we ourselves may be saints. And then again we all have that other side as well!
