The Hermit Crab/Poets United/prompt: The Body

The Hermit Crab

the body i live in                      the shell that surrounds me       the keeper of my heart

yes… it has changed                 but what hasn’t                         the baby fat of my cheeks

no longer so                             my hair no longer thick            or dark

shines silver in the moonlight   some of my teeth are gone          my chin reaches for my chest

my breasts                                 slip toward my belly                 my waist expanded

along with my hips                   and my skin is no longer full    …still i am here

just like the house i live in        there are cracks in the walls      some things need to be replaced

i call it home                            and like my body                     i am comfortable here

no one expects to remain         like the shiny new car               on the lot

if death doesn’t come first        i will grow old                          in my once young body

"if death doesn't come first"--a very good point! I like the comparison to hermit crab shells and to houses--very sturdy places to live. Comfortable there, o, yes! to be comfortable there is the key.

I love and admire the comfort, ease and acceptance of this time in our lives. No use fighting it. LOL. I really like "the shell that surrounds me / the keeper of my heart." Wonderful.

I love your words and share your philosophy Annell.
I am comfortable with my body and who I am, and my house is my home and will be until the day I die. In reality I want for nothing and that is a good place to be.
Much love

Beautifully poignant. Especially like the comparison to hermit crab shells and to houses.

We see the changes that aging brings to our bodies, and we either live with them in a state of calm acceptance, or we don't. You have chosen the wiser way: acceptance. That choice will steady you as even more changes come. May your journey be long and fruitful.
