Yesterday's Memories/ Imaginary Gardens with Real Toads

Yesterday’s Memories

there is a saying     if you want to make god laugh   make a plan

perhaps only a skeleton of a plan   if plans are too detailed         they fail

my best plan     is to make the most of everyday      write and paint

this present moment        inside/outside                 make it visible

laugh a little           laugh a lot                      sing a song

hum a tune           never look in the rearview mirror        all of texas is there

sailing, fishing        long stretches of empty highways         the little girl i was

stay in the present     the past                                 is where you are

son of mine           straight as a stick                      sun-streaked hair

if the door is cracked       just a little                      memories rush in

no need to return       even though i miss the gulls            screaming & diving

their keen eyes look for me         the water laps the pier    the sun burns hot

memories seared into my heart  stacked like pancakes       drizzled with syrup

It's amazing how many memories can fit through a small crack. One wee reminder, and the past unfolds around us as if no time has passed.

Oh you have written this exactly the way I have been feeling it these days, the door slightly ajar to the past, glimpses, the focus on today.........really beautiful, Annell.

A hint of nostalgia, especially poignant to me: memories stacked like pancakes.

Thank you!

I think the past works exactly like this... through small peaks into the past. Sometimes it's all we can bear.

Just beautiful.. memories slipping in through the cracks and the imagery of the rearview mirror and the pancake analogy..

I must visit the past snippets lest I am so overwhelmed it steals my today.

Letting those memories seep through is always comforting and dangerous, sometimes at the same time, and most times overwhelming. A powerful poem, Annell,

Your words are beautiful Annell, and making the most of everyday is the wisest of plans.
But memories do slip through into our thoughts and for a while, for good or for bad, change our present...and then we let them slip out again...and live for the hoped beauty of today.
Much love
