The Songs of the Crickets -- Are Silent Still/Imaginary gardens with real toads

The Songs of the Crickets – Are Silent Still

When you ask for something specific
All thought is thrown out the window
Perhaps there might have been
A thought earlier…or not

The morning surprised me
The big yellow sun
Came through the window
With its bells and charms

Awakened me with a start
I think I was dreaming
Swimming in a salty bay
The water blue as your eyes

And here you are
You and me
All is quiet
No big blue sea

No brightly colored floaties
No children around my feet
No laughter in the air
The shame-faced crickets

Dressed in black
With their insistent songs
Are silent still
Summer will come soon

This is great -- tender and thoughtful.

I cannot even dream of summer, spring has taken so long to arrive.

What a fabulous mood piece, Annell. So many different layers of colour, and silences. Most effective.

I love the sun with "bells and charms" and the sequence about the bay. But it seems unfair to mention parts of this poem when the entirety is so beautiful, gorgeous, and skillfully written. Wonderful wonderful stuff.

Such longing for something that was or you hope to be... that's how I "read" this. Beautiful!

The shame-faced crickets dressed in black - I love those lines so much! A beautiful poem full of imagery, Annell. And those crickets just knocked me out.

really loved this poem - following through the lines and wondered where it was taking me. Brilliantly unpredictable and imaginative -

those crickets left me with my mouth hanging open. and although summer will be here soon, there is longing in this poem.

atmospheric: sun and melancholy and , yet, somehow, hope

I love the way you used the sea in this... a new way at looking deep.
