dVerse/You Walked With Me -- Poets United/ Who Is There

Who Is There

i am intrigued by                 doors and doorways               they can be an entry

or when closed provide    a barrier to keep out the world         provide safety

against intruders           doorways can be a welcome     to friends and neighbors alike

or they can be              a passage from one place to another     or from one time to another

sometimes we are aware    of their presence         and at other times we don’t even notice

we step through them               amazed at the new place we are            as we age

we pass through           many doorways                        from childhood to be the young adult

from young adult to midlife     and one day                 without being aware

we will step though a doorway to old age         still there will be one last doorway

the doorway from life to death             knock, knock               who is there

You Walked With Me

on the day i left            i paused to ask             what can i hope for

the answer was            “there was nothing to hope for”           i asked for grace

grace to accept             what was before me                grace to continue to live

after all was lost to me    my mother appeared              it was her grace

i hoped for                   she took me by the hand          we walked down that hall

to your empty room     she was my role model             my mother of grace

You can't keep a good mother down. I love this one, Annell. My mother still helps out too.

Annell, how very moving this is. When there is nothing to hope for, grace is the miracle by which we walk down that hallway to the end of everything we ever dreamed. As I was reading, I was remembering you saying your mother had such grace, and then in your poem she appeared and walked with you. Wow. One of my very favourite of your poems.

How she came when needed, how she is--I am--always in the hall approaching the empty room. Powerful poetry! Thank you. May you feel the grace.

I think the two poems works as one... the doorways and the grace... in real life most doors only leads one way...

I liked the "knock knock" at the end. When I think of doors I remember Emerson's comment that every wall is a door.

Back to read your doorway poem, so full of the entries and passages we pass through in this life....so many doorways until that one final one into who knows where?

I like the way this poem progressed from actual doorways to passages in life. Beautiful, Annell.

We have to pass through so many doorways in one life! And the Mysterious Final one! Nicely said.

Two beautiful, thoughtful poems which give me a feeling of calm.

A journey to epiphanies, in which doorways and grace hold the key! Lovely!

Two wonderful thoughtful poems Annell.
I found the close of the first particularly moving and beautifully haunting.
Thank you for sharing.
