An Arrangement

what we have is an arrangement      nothing formal            no ceremony

one day i hung an iron heart              over the bedroom door           it seemed enough

my love is strong                                my word is true                   it was enough

you have been my lover since       we travel the road together            no promises

none needed                                       what is it called          perhaps there is no word

that identifies true love                      or maybe                     it is simply an arrangement

September 25, 2016 Sunday's Whirligig #78/ The Sunday Whirl #267/ Poets United Poets Pantry/ The Silence After

The Silence After

in the silence after      i clutch the ashes to my chest       carry them with me everywhere

the date burned into my brain       hard to remember       my former life it is as if

it has been drawn with a pencil         erased                     drawn again

upon examination       the work is a mess                         yet it is my life

all lines lead to you     i submit for your examination      the great divide

between what was before/wwb     and what is now/win              life goes on

even if we are no longer living       just alive until           we can live again

the summer night hot            the katydids                    sound their alarm

spreading the news                some even seem to scream         the land scorched

the drought drags on              hottest summer on record       long gone are the butterflies

flowers in the garden     gourds drying in the fields     the girls draw lines on the sidewalk

play hop-scotch                   end of summer                each little piece

placed into a capsule           perhaps one day              it will be opened

all will be revealed              remembered                    make sense

until then                 you will remain in a secret place              we share old memories

could we have picked a better story       shoplifted from another       lived another life

probably not           this story was written long ago               even before we were born

we just play our parts             learn our lines                       appear on stage when called

September 20, 2016 dVerse/ A Message Found/A Message of Peace

A Message Found/ A Message of Peace

before me on the ground         a feather left                   for me to find

from a messenger     who flies in the ethereal realm          i often think

i am being told        by one in high places               i am on the right road

everything will be ok     go forth                            no questions to be asked

none to be answered         no doubt                                     be at peace

she settles down in the nest      she constructed      she straightens her feathers

draws the little ones                  to her breast                             home at last

from all her straightening    a single feather floats to the ground      again for me to find

the message is the same           everything will be ok                   no questions to be asked

none to be answered                  no doubt                               go in peace

The Sunday Whirl #266/ Sunday's Whirigig/ Poets United/ Last Year and Before

Last Year and Before

1
with steely determination        i clutched            the offering in my hand

the sound of the gong             set the spell        entered the dark and shadowy temple

leaving the sun shiny morning outside      all was quiet inside          no singing

i had no concept            dropped the coins into the basket            made my selection

tied with a hand-dyed indigo thread into a small bundle      the tiny golden budha sparkled

by the light of the fire          in words i did not know                     it read

moon over heart                  standing together                       you explained

even when the sun isn't shining            there will always be light even if not very bright

therefore – moon over heart       enough light you will always be able to find your way

2

spring is gone                  summer too                        the weather has changed

fall is in the air                 a holiday                                   a celebration

NY largest city                center of the art world         an ambush waiting

a murderous tone           deplorable behavior                your guise deceptive

a champion of disrespect                          a real badass

try as i might              there was no understanding              a tragedy of sorts

today someone else                         determined to smite someone

a pressure-cooker bomb           29 injured                            no deaths.....yet

3

on my stretch of beach          no dolphins                      instead porpoise play

(small grey or white whales) i used to watch them dive from my kitchen window

high above the canal          they would rise out of the water slowly and breathe

dive and swim quickly       to catch the small fish         they called breakfast

life was filled with              do-funnies and whimsies          we were unaware

of the storm on the horizon         no flags flew                     no warning

just like a bomb                  just as sudden                      yet no explosion heard

on that autumn day             the sun was shining                   the air cool
