April 30, 2014 Writers Digest/ One Day Neal Went Away, and Call it a Good Day/ NaPoWriMo Poetry Prompt #30/ Life's Not Easy

Call It a Good Day
Returning home
After being away
Finding ‘myself’
Finding where I left off
Finding serious problems
That begin and end every thought
At the dentist
All minor complications
But each must be tended

Which keep me from my work
Today I drive to Santa Fe
Have an appointment
In the old town
Of adobe walls
Settling issues before
Moving forward
Life is that way
Before you are free
To do as you wish

There is a list of things
That must be tended to
When away
The list grows longer
More to do
Still in the studio
My work waits for me
Like the kitten by the barn door
Waiting for a bowl of milk
Soon I will be back at work
Everything in order
And at the end of the day
I will say it is a good day

 One Day Neil Went Away

Forewarned of his coming
The speckled shoes
Gator cowboy boots
Would give him away

A flawed character
Grew up
In a small Texas town
A flawed beginning
His sorrow
With him

Loved color and paint
The smoke
The drink
...And Maggie

To see him on the road
Trudging to town
To buy the smokes
The drink
Reminded me of Eeyore
(Oh, where was Winnie the Pooh
When we needed him)

A giant of a man
Wise and wondrous
Dumb as a stump
Never disappointed
In his intellect
More often than not
Good as could be
Worthless to a fault

Heart of gold
Full of love
Tears often
Filled his eyes
For you...
For me...
For all that he could see
Lived life in deep
Valley of sadness

Tried to change
His fate
Without luck
One day Neil
Went away
Still everyday
With Neal was a
Good Day

Life’s Not Easy
The phone rang
I recognized your voice
But not much of your words
You challenge me to remember
There are some things I can
Do something about
And some things I cannot

Your health is not good
Have you gone back to the drink
Is it drugs that have slurred your words
When I inquire you deny
You wanted to know if I had sent the
Money for the rent
It’s the kind of thing
That makes sleep impossible
I worry all night through

Years ago I vowed to allow
You your own path
No one ever promised
It would be easy
Not for you or for me
Our lives are tangled
Together for all times
Mother and Son

April 29, 2014 Writers Digest/ Get Real/NAPOWRIMO/ The Secret of the Desert

Get Real
To get real is to get small
Up close personal
Find the difference
This cannot be done
From a distance
Perhaps that is why we think
Of old people as being very real
Their lives become small
Perhaps they are more in the present
Not so much future left
And way too much past
How I like my oatmeal
Becomes the most important
Consideration of the day
Getting from one moment
To the next
Seeing things as they really are
Drop the pretenses
Being who I really am
Hard to know what is really real
What happens before or behind
The stage or on it
In the dream or
In the waking hours
Perhaps it is all real
Rolled up in a magic ball

The Secret of the Desert

After the wind and rain
Filled with threats
To blow my house down
Just like the wolf in
Little Red Riding Hood
Huffing and puffing
Slamming against the walls

In early morning
The sweet scent of sage
Carried on the soft breeze
Perfume of the desert
I stand mesmerized
I am not alone
Surrounded by pink and blue
Like the inside of an
Abalone shell
The secret revealed

April 27, 2014 Sunday Whirl/ You/ Writers Digest/http://1sojournal NAPOWRIMO/Dragons I've Known

You say the doctors said cancer
You speak under your breath
You were the one the only
You made your reputation
You were a cheat
You prepare to leave
You will be released
You will become a memory
You say if you had only known
You would have been different
You are as you are

Written for Elizabeth's Prompt NAPOWRIMO

Dragons I’ve Known
Dragons come in many colors
Fly through the air with the greatest of ease
Are not to be compared
For one is lucky to have a dragon in his life
They are strong and loyal friends.... or enemies
It is best if they are on your side
They appear unexpected
Often they spend their time hiding
Locked away
Don’t get out much
They can conquer all soul challenges
Even when you know them intimately
They are hard to define
