Not Just A Cup

 Not Just a Cup

Southern born

Not a tea drinker

Always coffee

For me

Although I often find

Bitter taste

Of the dark brew

A bit much

a little sugar and cream needed

To cut the bitter taste

It is a bit of a quandary

I really don’t like sweet coffee

Not just a cup of coffee

a cup of wake-up

a cup of come-to

a cup of get going

morning start

coffee strong brew

dark and stout

spine stiffening

try not to spit it out

hold it in your mouth

swallow

drink it down

hold out your cup

ask for another

a challenge this day will be

I enjoyed this, Annell - the taste, the need for sweetening, the need for it to give one energy to get started in the morning. I love my morning cup of tea, and usually follow it with a cup of sweet coffee. Some mornings, we need all the help we can get. Smiles.

I used to be a coffee drinker - ten cups a day. I gave it up pretty much cold turkey and now enjoy herbal uncaffeinated tea ALL hours of the day. I never used coffee to 'wake up' and never used sugar or cream. Looking back, the teas I drink now taste so much better than coffee; but it probably is an acquired taste.

A cup in the morning is definitely a wake up call. I am a tea person but also love coffee with milk and much sugar. My tea has to be just the raw liquor without milk and sugar. Smiles.

"morning start" indeed! Without it, the get up and go just isn't there.

Annell,
It's amazing how a first morning cuppa is part of commencing each day...there's an emptiness without it...a habit to revive and get going!

Annell, first off, I am a coffee drinker myself. Sure, after dinner, it's herbal tea, so I can actually fall asleep! But throughout the day, starting with the first smell of brewing and that first heavvvvvvvvenly sip, you have the feeling and express it perfectly. Well done!

I can so identify with this:
"Not just a cup of coffee
a cup of wake-up
a cup of come-to
a cup of get going" -- Amen!

Oh, we do have to arm ourselves for whatever a day may bring. I too like a strong cup of "spine stiffening" courage. Love this poem
