Absence
your absence          is as substantial                               as your presence
it breathes              it wails in the dark                       tears cascade down
it abandons memory      the comforts for home             warmth and safety
it is openness        without boundaries      the desert of loneliness stretches
as far as the eye can see         it curls like a worm in the core of your being
forever hungry          it consumes you                            leaves you empty
like an abandoned building         waiting too long                for your return
demands payment              hides itself from view       springs when least expected
equipped with claws          sharp teeth                         and one glaring eye
which never closes             watches the clock                    notes the hour
stretching minutes             to unbearable lengths            uses subterfuge
plays to win                     devours all that is before it            without warning
returns regularly              you have no weapons                    you are defenseless

So true. Absence which has no boundaries is surely a monster!
Oh that is such a despairing absence....and one we are defenseless against.
It is good to think we thought a little the same - especially the abandoned building - you reminded me how loud and demanding absence is...a beast indeed
Ha, the first response to the prompt that I wrote, and didnt post, said much the same - that I had known death would come, but not how huge a presence Absence becomes. There is no comfort for such an absence. You have expressed this so well.
Yes, sometimes absence is as substantial as presence....it has a heaviness to it that cannot be lifted. It consumes you and leaves one empty indeed. Absence indeed plays to win & sometimes does!
Wow, that absence is surely a powerful presence!
Gosh, this is so very vivid and intense.
"your absence is as substantial as your presence" how true! and we are defenseless...so deeply touching....
Absence and presence, both amount something. Here it is vivid.Nice.
That first sentence is so profound. To think about it is really weighty....sometimes a person's absence can actually be even more substantial than their presence ever was. Really thought-provoking line, Annell.
Oh yes absence is that hollow
Much love...
Much about anxiety, is much about absence.
