Robin's egg blue
Color of the sky
Early morning clouds
Edged golden silver
A pair
Of flycatchers
That have nested
In my carport
Two years in a row
His call floats
Across the sage
He seemed so
Happy at his return
He was outside
The studio
Singing at the top
Of his range
As if to say
"I'm back!"
Last year
The first day
She laid her eggs
The horrible
Twins of the neighborhood
Heckle and Jeckle
Attacked the nest
And got one egg
Leaving only two
They kept guard
As the little ones
Slept in their eggs
We tried to help
I threatened those magpies
Two reached their
Time to fledge
And they flew
That is all
A young couple
Can hope for
Be they man or bird
When the young
Reach maturity
They leave the nest
They fly

Oh Annell, am so glad you decided to share these beautiful sketches, and the poem is a wonderful story, to remind us of life.

that is what we hope though we know a few might get broken or taken along the way unfortunately...
What a beautiful drawing of the nest. So touching. Love the analogy, whether man or bird, they leave the nest and they fly....sometimes they careen, sometimes they crash but, once launched, it is their journey to make. Love this, both poem and wonderfully executed nest.
Delightfully seasonal. Lovely.
Love the drawing & the lovely story. So wonderful to experience nature unfolding right before you.
Annell, I love the poem and the drawing, such truth in your words.

Life in a nutshell - Great drawing!
Love the story of these birds. Magpies are such thugs.
You painted a realistic picture with this piece ... Heckle and Jeckle ~ names from my cartoon past.
Nothing but crows and hawks here, yet, and still a foot of snow - two, where it drifted. Oy. Fine write, cool artwork.
nicely done again Annell...thanks for sharing...and i actually love the magpies..happy trails
Annell, all of this is beautiful. I have a problem with birds that attack the eggs in others' nests, too. Mommy and Daddy did a good job. The final stanza, linking all parenthood, was a lovely touch. Mine left the nest a few years ago, but she knows there's always a safe place for her, just in case! ;) Amy

Lovely description, Annell. It is so nice when our friends from nature return for another year.
That is beautiful!
