August 9, 2014 The Sunday Whirl/ Coyote Searches for Breakfast

Coyote Searches for Breakfast
The morning quiet
In the east
The sun has risen
Over the mountain
Still low in the sky
It shines on Russian Sage
In the courtyard
Disguised as harmless
Lavender plant
As its’ roots reach out
Underground
Beautiful terrorist
Plots and plans
To take over
The whole mesa

I listen for you
Nothing is heard
The morning quiet
In the shadow of the church
One woman in black
Only her hands and face
Can be seen in the darkness
Bends at the waist
Head in hands
Weeps
She has reached her limit
No longer knows the way

We are told
Because of recent rains
Taos County is now considered
To be only in mild drought
We are lucky
We have water
This cannot be said
Of some other areas
Dry as bleached bones
Grain will not be planted this year

It is a case of unsolved mystery
Someone is missing
Quietly without sound
Someone’s heart breaks
When asked why
The woman in black
Looks me straight in the eye
Does not answer
The morning quiet
Coyote searches for breakfast

I love this so much. You put me right there, I can smell the sage, see the mesa, watch coyote, I see the woman in black. Beautiful, sad and so much the way life is.

So many vivid images...I saw a wonderful woman dressed all in black the other day..she looked like she no longer needed to say but was 'whole' no longer scavenging

So many stories here.. told, and untold.. the desert with it's inhabitants, the magic of your area.. a perfect fit to the pictures over at PU.. thank you for sharing.

Coyote is a trickster and I hope she found her breakfast. Your poem is a vivid landscape, not only of place, but emotions as well,
