November 13, 2014 dVerse/Faith in Drawing

Faith in Drawing

It is what I do
When working on a long study
Each day I begin anew
Tie the day’s drawing to the day before

A lot like ironing
Out the wrinkles
Making it smooth all over

Creating one drawing
Though it is made up of
Many days
Weeks
Months
Time stitched together seamless
However long it takes...

There is no way to get in a hurry
Just slow down
Don’t make judgments
When I hear things like
”No that isn’t right
It is not going to work out”

I gently put my finger to my lips
Shush...just wait
Keep working
Too soon to know
If there is faith in anything
Let it be in drawing

May 20, 2014

In spite of everything I shall rise again: I
will take up my pencil, which I have
forsaken in my great discouragement, and
I will go on with my drawing.
Vincent Van Gogh

During the act of creation in the Arts, like the act of love, there is no empirical way to be critical about the process while in the middle of it. Love the Van Gogh quote--out of the mouth of madness beauty flows.

I like the sense of time taken to create, however long or short that span may be, and the sense that it's something that must be done. I feel that way about my writing and photography.

a grand lesson to learn

Excellent. I like the part about not hurrying and slowing down. Also, the advice to not judge the work too quickly is great. That can be used toward any artistic endeavor.

Perfect description of the creative process, whatever the medium, and, of course, of life. Nicely developed. A good poem for me today as I've rushed, rushed, rushed--ruled by impatience.

Wow, what a great Van Gogh quote. Love your perseverance, and your calm and steady pace, Annell. I have my head deep in photo books for the kids for xmas, not much else is getting done. But I am having so much fun!

oh i like this much.... drawing or living life without judgement... think we judge too quickly and then stop doing something because we're afraid it won't work... for me it's about losing the angst and just keep on doing the things that are on our heart

the creativity of any kind makes one happy and happiness can be the key to faith.

How wise your words are...it's a great reminder to have patience when drawing, and to simply surrender to the process. I love the idea of it as faith. Beautiful poem!
