Wiwajang Wacipi Wakane Wopila
Billowing columns of white smoke
rise from your camp fire.
Wheels rattle along dusty dirt roads.
Lacy shadows crawl in patterns
across the pathway.
Blue morning glories cascade
on a roadside fence.
Deep in the heart of the canyon,
The river flows,
Reflecting blue skies.
Wiwajang Wacipi Wakane Wopila
You stand before me in memory,
Your Mother, your Aunts,
And your Grandmother,
All of the women of your line.
We shared the same dwelling
In different time and space.
When I came,
You had already departed,
But left your energy
Neatly folded upon the shelf,
For me to find.
And now, in the season,
You come to my land,
We hold friendship sacred.

Reading this is like standing in a dry but beautiful landscape. Well done.
a rather stirring poem annell...you had me standing right there...and thinking of ancestors...nice one shot.
I loved this, especially the penultimate stanza spoke to me, about sharing the same dwelling at different times (btw, did you mean 'space' in the second line?), and about the energy left
Neatly folded upon the shelf,
For me to find.
I agree with gospelwriter the two lines that also touch my heart are:
Neatly folded upon the shelf,
For me to find.
this is the cycle of life in a few stanzas - love how you connect with the women of your past here...lovely...bkm
this is a wonderful poem Annell, each verse evokes a familiar scene and I find the second half particularly poignant.
So very beautiful, I felt as though your words were calling me. I too think of the women in my family before me ..all living the same just in different areas and different conditions. Your poem is so spiritual.
Lovely...
Wonderful poem. Felt like I was right there.
Beautiful in the connections made, the sound of the lines, and those clouds in the photo are stunning too.
Perfect. Thank you.
Lovely, stunning photos and gentle voice of respect for those who went before us and for the movement of everything, including shadows cast by clouds. I enjoyed your poem - it was like a visit to an old friend.
i needed a little bit of taos today..i came to the right place.!
