I WOULD LIKE TO WRITE A TRIBUTE TO OUR COUNTRY/ dVersr: Poetics: Bold Tributes

I WOULD LIKE TO WRITE A TRIBUTE TO OUR COUNTRY

It is curious                   what we were taught     really doesn’t match

What happened            we found a new            and wonderful land

We brought death         war & destruction         we said, we were

Men of "god"                  we embraced                a way of life

That held men in chains   sold humans              men/ women & babies too

A half-a-crown will do                          these people

Built this country       we wanted their labor cheap        put silver in our pockets

Because their skin was different           and now a man of orange

Would like us to continue in the way                  step back in time

his ideas should be shot down              before they rise

the fellow is totally mad     mad as a hatter      we seek safety in the bar

we raise our voices         in unison                      we scream for help

Our leader                     has lost "our" way           a tiny man among men

Will we follow               like lemmings                   right over the cliff

"Yes; quaint and curious war is!
You shoot a fellow down
You'd treat if met where any bar is,
Or help to half-a-crown."
⁃ Thomas Hardy
from, 'The Man He Killed'

Words for my poem were taken from this quote by Tomas Hardy.

Nice work Annell. Much truth here.

I really like this, but I do not love to read it... there will be some disaster before it ends... hope it's not the end.

The man of orange—they have never been any good. It's an omen.

Be careful which apple you pick, the shiny one may have a maggot inside.

I am stunned by that "half a crown"...I know it's monetary as well, but it seems so telling. Are we (halfway) back to a state of monarchy, in some ways?

I like this phrase "Our leader has lost "our" way "

Excellent work Annell. But I hate to disagree with you. I don't think our leader lost his way. I think he was clueless from the beginning. The clever insert if half-crown says so very much. Well done.

It is sad what we have embraced -war, hate and destruction~ Your leader has really lost his way!

Yes..it is a major step back into time. I cannot relate to the hate and lack of awareness of culture. Enjoyed your poem, Annell.

A hard-hitting tribute, Annell!

I have to agree with you regarding the mad hatter, but I do not think our voices are raised in unison. Unfortunately, far too many are more than willing to be lemmings in the name of patriotism or whatever other ideal.

I resonate with every line. I dont understand why so many are staying silent. Wonder what they are afraid of. He is only a man. Good for you, writing truth plain, telling it like it is. There will be another women's march in March. Cant believe it has been one year of this deranged horribleness.

You’ve said it well.
