WITHOUT THOUGHT
end of summer grasshoppers galore snakes in the shade
lizards as well it is the noon hour birds are silent
they have gone where birds go when it is hot they also seek shade
perhaps they wait for a cooler afternoon clouds bank over the mountains
a pearly white against a clear New Mexican blue weeds crowd the garden
trees in full leaf every shade of green she whispers
take care/beware life is tender treat nature carefully
lovingly nature is abundant when we do a paradise
as humans, we have done it all dug in the earth for ancient fuel
polluted most everything we touched soiled our cage
we have given no thought to the young that will follow
nor thought of the animals who share our space it is a time of “greed”
we have raped and plundered without knowledge without thought

From the wonders to the horrors. Well put.
At first I thought of instinct we see in small animals and plants, and then thought, oh no! Could it be this is instinct in humans, too? But in fact, instinct and thoughtlessness are not the same. Humans have a choice, and I hear you rue what we do with that choice.
I am visualizing the creatures in your hot summer afternoon, and love the trees whispering to us to take care. I so feel all you express in this poem, my friend.
From serene beauty to human thoughtlessness Well written
You have captured the spectrum of it Annell....from the wonder to the devastation of man's ways. Strong message in your lines!
'Without Thought' indeed! Really don't know how could humans afford to be such reckless! Love the idyllic scenes in the first half of the poem.
Wonderful images you captured. Strong message.

Humanity is the cause of many disasters but nature seems able to soldier on against the odds!

The first two stanzas are beautiful and peaceful - expressing all that nature is. The final stanza is disconcerting, expressing vividly how humans have 'soiled the cage.' Powerful.
