Empty Chairs/poets united poets pantry -- the sunday whirl world 380

Empty Chairs

What is missing
What is this entity
Which creates space
But is not there?

There is evidence
That is was here
Like an animal
Leaves evidence

Where it makes it’s bed in the grass
What is the potential
Of finding this missing something?
Does it leave a scent in the air?

This feeling of something missing
Rolls over me
Leaves all wounds bare
Sometimes it is hard to decide

Is there really something missing?
Or is it just an everyday emptiness
I feel…
To overcome the feeling

Would be a victory
Perhaps it is just a feeling of loss
A festive table set with empty chairs?
No one expected

The image of a table set with empty chairs certainly makes the hole bigger...

Oh I can see that table set with empty chairs. A feeling of loss indeed, which accompanies this time in our lives, as there have been so many. And yet we take what comfort and pleasure in the day as we can, grateful to still be here, and not among the missing.

The image of the empty chairs around a festive table speaks eloquently about the missing ones...

This is very sad, Annell. It speaks to holiday blues and loneliness....from deep emotion.

I just love the idea of evidence of and 'entity which creates space
But is not there?'like an afterglow. I'll be thinking of this later.

It is the time of year when a sense of loss seems to be so much more with us … at times, profoundly so. Certainly the people I have lost in my life are omnipresent with me, periodically, as the holidays and a new year approaches. And yes, even in the middle of a crowd, one can be very lonely.

You have articulated 'that feeling' impactfully and with poignance in this piece, Annell.

A sad time as we age and have lost so many but as you said in another poem, we must be thankful for what we have and live in the moment. Lovely poem.

I love this-
This feeling of something missing
Rolls over me
Leaves all wounds bare

that starkness is so big- so potent.

Oh those last two lines.....they are so very sad. I think about this time of year and all the hoopla surrounding Christmas...bright lights, presents, etc and then realize, for some people, this is a very difficult time of year. Like a festive table set with chairs that are empty...losses most apparent this time of year.
