“What Have You to Say?”

Some days are like that
When asked, “What have you to say?”
There is no answer
The mind is blank

You have nothing to say
You sit in silence
Hoping no one will notice
There are no sparkling words

You are alone in the room
The clock ticks in the hall
The sound echoes in the room
Like high-heeled footsteps on a hard wood floor

Becoming louder and louder
The sounds bounce off the walls
The moment is more about waiting
Waiting for what, you ask

Waiting for the imagined words to appear
Fall stunningly from your lips
You sit up straighter
In expectation

Still they do not come
Remain hidden
Perhaps they will come later
Perhaps they will not come at all

Perhaps you are dead
Died in your sleep
You just don’t know it yet
The future could be silent

The final stanza gives me a lot to think about!

This poem is very arresting. Especially the idea that one could be dead without really knowing it yet. I can feel the depth of the silence. A powerful poem, my friend. So well done.

The last stanza - amazing. Someone who dies in their sleep and doesn't know it. this resonates.

love the images the high heeled shoes across a hard wood floor...that alone is a moving stillness...waiting, waiting...maybe they will never come...beautiful...bkm

Maybe this is how it will be... we trickle slowly to silence ... and die

And yet, give us writing materials and the words come....

Such familiar images, all those hollow echoes waiting to be filled by the first word.

These moments are killers, figuratively speaking, when the words disappear, into thin air. An experience, I know, all too well, with my learning disabilities. Only after, do the words come back, when you've finished the meeting, five minutes ago.
